Tyler Smith, Director of Energy and Consulting, ConsenSys, former Petroleum Geoscientist and Head of Blockchain, BHP Billiton

There is still time to register for the AIPN-YN US Chapter event on blockchain technology! The blockchain is an existing technology that is already revolutionizing major industries, including Oil & Gas. As the internet transformed communication and changed the way we do business throughout the world, the blockchain is the technology that will further transform the way we buy and sell, interact with governments and verify the authenticity and identity, execute contracts, manage money, verify and transfer title ownership, work with supply chain, insurance, voting, and so on. It combines the openness of the internet with the security of cryptography to give everyone a faster, safer way to verify key information and establish trust.

AIPN members are invited to learn about applications of this technology, what role it already plays and will continue to play in the near future in Oil & Gas industry, and how the businesses will operate. Governments all over the world have already taken notice and begun to engage with the blockchain technology community. Oil & Gas companies such as BHP Billiton and Maersk have already begun building production systems which harness the capabilities of blockchain platform to increase the efficiency and transparency of their business processes. Leading banks are investing millions of dollars into R&D on blockchains, and Banco Santander published an estimated savings to the banking industry of over $20 billion per year by 2020 due to blockchain savings.

Tyler Smith helps energy companies experiment and build Blockchain applications that increase productivity, security, transparency, and collaboration within the companies and with their third parties. The Blockchain will transform business processes across Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, Petrochemical and Energy grids.

Prior to joining ConsenSys earlier this year, he was Head of Blockchain at BHP Billiton leading innovation in this technology space across the whole company. Under Tyler’s leadership, BHP Billiton initiated building and testing a pilot project to understand the full potential of this technology and transform the company through automation of the business processes.

Tyler got interested and involved with new emerging technologies in 2012 while working as a Petroleum Geoscientist at BHP Billiton.

He has Ph.D. in Earth Science from Rice University and Bachelor’s in Geology from Brigham Young University.
