The 2017 AIPN Model Contracts Workshop is June 19-22 in Oslo, Norway

HOUSTON, Texas and OSLO, Norway (June  13, 2017) – The Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN) will host its longstanding annual Model Contracts Workshop June 19-22, 2017, at the Hotel Continental in Oslo, Norway. This year’s workshop agenda includes presentations and interactive discussions on AIPN model contracts, with a focus on new contracts currently in development or under revision.

“The Model Contracts Workshop is a mainstay of AIPN programs, contributing to the successful creation and use of AIPN model contracts over three decades. This workshop provides a perfect forum for members and industry participants to provide feedback while these contracts are in development to allow the organization to produce model contracts that are widely accepted and used in the international energy industry. These contracts are effective tools that serve as the starting point for negotiations, allowing both parties to focus their efforts on key commercial and contract terms, thus significantly decreasing the amount of time required to finalize a deal,” commented AIPN Executive Director John Bridges.

The following types of contracts will be featured in the 2017 workshop:

  • Unitization and Unit Operating Agreement – Revision of 2006 version
  • Rollout of the International Dispute Resolution Agreement – Revision of 2004 version
  • International Farmout Agreement – Revision of 2004 version
  • Asset Purchase and Sale Agreement
  • International Joint Operating Agreement (2012)
  • Unconventional Resources Operating Agreement (2014)
  • International Drilling Contract and Services Agreement
  • Area of Mutual Interest Agreement

In addition, the workshop will kick-off with a session on globalization and protectionism discussing how recent geopolitical changes, including Brexit and the Trump Presidency, will impact the oil & gas industry. Another session will dive deep into the recent developments and trends in common and civil law on issues that arise under the suite of AIPN Model Agreements. Lastly, a panel session covering corporate sustainability efforts, including contract disclosure, human rights clauses in JOAs and the Modern Slavery Act, and the impact they have on business.

Co-chairing the 2017 event are Sean Korney, Partner, Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Torgeir Løland, Vice President Commercial, Negotiation & Access, Exploration Strategy & Business Development, Statoil ASA of Stavanger, Norway.
