On April 2021, the International Energy Agency (IEA) called for an end to fossil fuel investment in an effort to tackle the climate crisis and reach the Net‐Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE). Pursuant to this report, fossil fuel use falls drastically in NZE, for which no new oil and natural gas fields are required beyond those that have already been approved for development. Thus, “no exploration for new resources is required and, other than fields already approved for development, no new oil fields are necessary”. The IEA notwithstanding sustains that investment in existing sources of oil production are needed. In respect to gas, the IEA has also concluded that “no new natural gas fields are needed in the NZE beyond those already under development” and neither are the liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction facilities currently under construction or at the planning stage.
Organized by the Latin America and Caribbean Chapter, join our speakers in a discussion of the impact, challenges and opportunities that this decision has in O&G projects worldwide.
