Membership Qualifications & How to Join
AIPN offers three types of memberships: Active, NOC and Student.
Active Membership in the AIPN is open to individuals who are engaged in international negotiations of hydrocarbons; supporting international negotiations; or actively seeking participation in international negotiations.
More specifically, Active Membership in the Association shall be available to all persons who are engaged in, or who are actively seeking participation in:
(i) international negotiations work relating to the acquisition, implementation, or transfer of rights, title, or interests to explore, develop and produce hydrocarbons;
(ii) negotiation of international commercial transactions relating to the rights, title, or interests to hydrocarbons, including the sale, purchase, transportation, liquefaction and processing of hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon products and the commercial aspects of hydrocarbon-based projects;
(iii) negotiation of international commercial transactions relating to hydrocarbon-based electric generation projects; or
(iv) providing professional services in direct support of the international negotiations work described in subsections (i), (ii) and (iii), including dispute resolution. By way of illustration, but not in limitation, the persons providing such supporting professional services include engineers, lawyers, geologists, geophysicists, accountants, educators, investment bankers, and government officials.
Each Active Member applicant must list three (3) Active or NOC Members in good standing (current on dues), each of whom must be willing to act as a reference on the applicant’s behalf. The annual fee for Active Membership is $150.
National Oil Company Membership
NOC membership is available to those who meet the criteria for Active Membership (detailed above), and who are employed by a National Oil Company (NOC) that has a minimum of 51% government ownership. AIPN defines an NOC as:
a) an oil and/or gas company in which a government owns, directly or indirectly, a controlling participation; or
b) a governmental authority/ministry whose primary function is to draft and/or administer state policy for hydrocarbon exploration and development.
Each NOC Member applicant must list three (3) Active or NOC Members in good standing (current on dues), each of whom must be willing to act as a reference on the applicant’s behalf. The annual fee for NOC Membership is $150. AIPN offers the option of a fee-waived NOC membership to those qualifying NOC applicants who are experiencing administrative or economic obstacles that would otherwise prevent him or her from becoming an AIPN member. NOC applicants can request this during the application process.
Student Membership is available to individuals currently enrolled in a college or university of higher learning.
Each Student Member applicant must list one (1) Active or NOC Member in good standing (current on dues) who is willing to act as a reference on the applicant’s behalf. Also, Student Member applicants must submit proof of student status and expected graduation date at time of application.

The annual fee for Student Membership is $25.
Upon graduation, Student Members will automatically become Active Members of the association.
Once your application is received, along with payment (if applicable), required documentation (Student applicants must submit proof of enrollment and expected graduation date), and all required references have positively responded, your application will be submitted to the AIPN Board of Directors at its next Board meeting for review. You will be notified thereafter regarding your admission via email.
AIPN membership is based on a calendar year from January 1 to December 31. Applicants admitted on or after September 1 will have their dues payment applied to the remainder of the year, as well as the following calendar year.
Retired Members: Membership dues for retired Active Members are reduced by fifty percent (50%) for so long as the Active Member remains retired. If you are newly retired, please email email@example.com to let us know!
Please note: Membership shall not be open to persons seeking membership for commercial purposes or to capitalize on the AIPN in furtherance of their current business, industry or trade unrelated to (i)-(iv) above.
All information requested in the membership application forms, payment of the annual dues for membership and the required number of references must be provided within 120 days after the date on which the membership application form was provided to AIPN or the application shall be automatically returned. If payment of the annual dues was made by wire transfer and the membership application has been returned, refund of the annual dues payment shall be made less any administrative costs incurred by the AIPN relating to the wire transfer. Re-application for AIPN membership may be made by the applicant.
